چکیده

In three experiments we explored the mental representation of morphologically complex words in French. Subjects were asked to perform a gender decision task on morphologically complex words that were of the same gender as their base or not. We found that gender decisions were made more slowly for morphologically complex words made from a base with an opposite gender compared to words for which the gender of the base matches that of the derived noun. Similar results were obtained for words that are pseudo-morphologically complex while no effect was observed for nonmorphological embedded words. Our results suggest that during gender identification of derived and pseudo-derived words, morpheme and pseudo-morpheme lexical representations are activated, as well as their gender information. Also our results suggest that the noun ending predictability effect observed in previous experiments could in fact reflect decomposition into morphemes. 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The Morpheme Gender Effect: An Evidence for Decomposition

In three experiments we tested the decomposition for morphologically complex words in French. Subjects were asked to perform a gender decision task on morphologically complex words that were either of the same gender as their stem or not. We found that the gender of morphologically complex words made from a stem with an opposite gender is more slowly retrieved compared to a condition where the ...

The Influence of Gender Information on Written Language Production

The authors report on a gender priming experiment in German using typewritten language production in a picture naming task. The experiment was conducted with 20 native speakers of German with a wide range of typing skills. In the gender primed condition, gender information was provided by presenting and naming the definite German determiner before the picture naming task. The unprimed condition...

Clitic pronouns reveal the time course of processing gender and number in a second language.

This study investigates grammatical gender and number processing marked on clitic pronouns in native Spanish speakers and in late English-Spanish bilinguals using ERPs. Spanish clitic pronouns were chosen as a critical grammatical structure which is absent in English, and which encodes both grammatical gender and number. Number, but not grammatical gender, is present in English, making this str...

Samples of writings of both groups were studied and analyzed through affixation principles. The frequency of ...

Cross-morphemic predictability and the lexical access of compounds in Mandarin Chinese

Chinese poses a challenge for models of compound processing, since the basic notions of morpheme, word and phrase are not consistently distinguished by native speakers. It is thus proposed that the mental lexicon consists of linked and overlapping listemes (in the sense of Di Sciullo and Williams 1987) which can potentially be of any size (morpheme, word, phrase). One implication of this approa...
